The 2nd UN Ocean Decade Regional Conference Ignited Global Efforts For Ocean Sustainability

    The Government of Thailand and UNESCO/IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) recently hosted the 2nd UN Ocean Decade Regional Conference alongside the 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference in Bangkok, Thailand. From April 22-25, 2024, this conference served as a crucial platform for promoting worldwide efforts in ocean sustainability.

  With a remarkable turnout of over 1,200 participants representing more than 40 countries, the conference witnessed a vibrant exchange of ideas and expertise. A total of 414 oral presentations and 169 poster presentations were delivered, showcasing the latest research and initiatives dedicated to addressing the pressing challenges confronting our oceans.

  The event featured a comprehensive program, including 25 scientific sessions, 13 Decade Action Workshops, and 12 Decade Action Incubators, aimed at fostering collaborative efforts to translate scientific knowledge into actionable solutions. Additionally, participants engaged in 8 Side Events and a Town Hall Session, providing forums for discussions on policy, innovation, and community engagement in ocean governance.

 Among the distinguished attendees were representatives from Mindanao State University at Naawan, who made significant contributions to the conference. Dr. Aida D. Perpetua, faculty member of the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Science (CAFES), along with Dr. Allyn Duvin P. Hinoguin and Dr. Venus E. Leopardas from the College of Marine and Allied Sciences (CMAS), enriched the discussions with their expertise and insights. Furthermore, Ms. Mayenne P. Balaba, a Graduate Research Fellow pursuing a Ph.D. in Marine Biology at CMAS, provided a fresh perspective, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing marine challenges.

 As the conference wraps up, its impact is set to echo worldwide, inspiring everyone to work together to protect our oceans for the future. With a renewed promise to collaborate, stakeholders are determined to create a more sustainable and resilient ocean environment.
