International Training Program on Designing Environmental Citizen Science Studies Concludes in Cagayan de Oro City

The VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP) Workshop 2: Designing Environmental Citizen Science Studies culminated with great success at the Chali Beach Resort and Conference Center, leaving a lasting impact on environmental science and collaboration. Hosted from November 6 to 17, 2023, the workshop, a collaborative effort between Universiteit Hasselt (UHasselt) in Belgium, the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Visayas State University (VSU), focused on Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science capacity in the Philippines.

The ITP initiative, designed to imbue professionals with transversal skills and contemporary knowledge on sustainable development, engaged participants in an immersive learning environment. By amalgamating global perspectives, the program aimed to foster inclusive networks while equipping professionals with the tools to drive change within their spheres of influence.

Week 1 of the workshop, conducted by Prof. Dr. Natalie Beenaerts, centered on environmental monitoring and management, while Week 2, steered by Prof. Dr. Thomas Neyens, delved into the intricacies of designing observational studies, especially in the context of citizen-science projects. Participants gained insights into statistical study design and practical considerations for empirical research, catering to a diverse audience with varying levels of statistical expertise.

Of notable focus during the workshop was the relevance of co-creating citizen science, particularly emphasizing the involvement of women and minority groups. Understanding the pivotal role of community-driven research in influencing policymakers, the workshop aimed to amplify the collective voice of the people to drive policy action.

Assoc. Prof. Kaent Immanuel N. Uba and Mr. Jomar F. Besoña from the School of Marine Fisheries and Technology actively participated in this transformative training program, contributing their expertise to the enriching discussions and collaborative endeavors.

The VLIR-UOS International Training Program Workshop 2 not only fortified knowledge but also cultivated a network of passionate professionals dedicated to environmental sustainability, reinforcing the commitment to foster change and innovation through collaborative efforts. This initiative signifies a pivotal step towards advancing environmental science and fostering collaborative endeavors in the Philippines and beyond, paving the way for a more informed and empowered approach to sustainable development.
