Global Researcher Explores Sustainable Aquaculture Initiatives at MSUN
Jonathan Dong, a Hamilton College alum and current Bristol Fellow, embarked on a research mission to delve into the worldwide surge in sustainable aquaculture. Dong, who graduated from Hamilton College – New York in 2021, and is currently interning at SEAFDEC/AQD in Tigbauan, Iloilo, took his quest for knowledge to Mindanao State University at Naawan.
Dong's fellowship, courtesy of the Hamilton College – Bristol Fellowship program, provides him with a unique opportunity to investigate the global rise of sustainable aquaculture practices. His visit to MSU at Naawan was twofold: to better understand the university's objectives and to produce a documentary series spotlighting the remarkable efforts of governments, private organizations, and individuals in advancing aquaculture in their respective regions. Furthermore, Dong aimed to dispel any misconceptions about Mindanao while shedding light on MSU at Naawan's contributions to enhancing the livelihoods of local communities.
The School of Marine Fisheries and Technology, along with the Research Division, warmly welcomed Dong, offering him an extensive tour of the university's aquaculture and research facilities. Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa, alongside other officials, actively participated in interviews conducted by Dong, contributing to the narrative of MSU at Naawan and the broader landscape of Philippine aquaculture. This collaborative effort is set to be disseminated through published articles, journals, documentaries, and various media platforms.
Dong's endeavor exemplifies the growing interest and commitment towards sustainable aquaculture practices on a global scale. His work at the intersection of academia and hands-on experience is poised to make a significant contribution to the advancement of aquaculture initiatives worldwide.
